Friendly City Finds: Art, Books & Pumpkin Spice Pancakes

November 2, 2018 by Guest
  1. Every first Friday of the month is one of our favorite nights downtown. If you’re interested in viewing, buying or creating art, First Friday’s Downtown  is something you shouldn’t miss. It’s from 5-8pm, but there’s always live music or events that will make you want to stay even longer. Even if you’re not passionate about art, it’s the best time to explore and connect with people downtown. You’ll run into people you know or haven’t seen in awhile, discover new things about the businesses that you might pass everyday, and inevitably wander into a retail shop, restaurant or event because something gets your attention. Make sure to stop by Downtown Wine & Gourmet for free wine tastings. Sparrow’s Flowers is celebrating the addition of Grey Peony Boutique to the shop with giveaways, kid friendly activities, a raffle, and delicious snacks! Pop into Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn for their customer appreciation weekend. Plus, you can find live music at any of these locations: The Artful Dodger, Court Square Theater, The Golden Pony, The Friendly Fermenter, Restless Moons Brewing, Clementine and Pale Fire.
  2. Speaking of First Fridays, did you know that The Gaines Group has been hosting artists in their office for years? In fact, owner Charles Hendricks attributes First Fridays to helping him grow his network when he first moved to Harrisonburg. And to think he found out about the monthly event from HDR’s printed newsletter many moons ago!  The Gaines Group and HDR’s newsletter has come a long way. Read how Charles Hendricks got his start in the Friendly City on his newest blog. Leave him some words of gratitude on his Facebook page too for being such a huge supporter of our community. Just yesterday, he signed on to sponsor the holiday Cookie Tour.
  3. Massanutten Regional Library has a selection of books, DVDs and magazines that are 50% off right now. They also have great programming all of the time.  Check out their free movie showings every week for both kids and adults, and their annual book sale Nov 5-7th.
  4. Food.Bar.Food’s brunch special today is definitely worth a mention! Pumpkin spice pancakes with cream cheese swirl, brown butter & maple syrup and poached cranberry popsicle. Is your mouth-watering yet? These aren’t the only tastes of fall that you’ll find downtown. HDR’s marketing interns, Noelle and Rania, have been out searching for all the best fall flavors. They found everything from lattes to popcorn to candles. Keep your eyes peeled for their blog next week!
