On the third Friday of each month, Brothers hosts an event called “Cask for a Cause,” where they team up with a local nonprofit organization to create a one-time special brew. Proceeds from the cask go to the specific charity or organization. HDR created a citrusy, mulled-style beer.
The celebration went from noon until closing, with bands JAXN, Delaplane, and Many Nights Ahead playing from 3 o’clock on. The bands kept guests at Brothers entertained with rock, jazz, folk, and bluegrass throughout the day. At 5pm, it was time for the cask to be tapped. HDR’s board president, Andy Perrine did the honors.
It was a special moment when the entire crowd awaited the cask to be tapped. The cask consisted of Brothers’ weekender beer, Wild Rover, which is an imperial Irish red ale, along with spices such as cinnamon, cardamon, cloves, ginger, and lemon. Earlier in the week, the HDR team helped create the cask with co-owner Jason Shifflett, a symbolic part of the Cask for a Cause process. The cask was well-received at the event, especially given its seasonal, citrus taste during a cold January day.
After the cask was tapped, the silent auction for the evening officially began. Eight packages from downtown businesses were featured, including packages from Friendly City Co-op, Walkabout Outfitters, Shenandoah Bicycle Company, Court Square Theater/Shirley’s Popcorn, VA Momentum, and of course, Brothers and HDR. Bidding got competitive between guests (all in good fun!) with proceeds from the auction going to HDR.
As the night wrapped up, guests finished their locally crafted beers, cheering to Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance and Brothers Craft Brewing.
