Skeleton Fest

Harrisonburg’s pre-Halloween party blends aspects of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos in a big, community celebration. Activities kicks off with trick-or-treating at downtown businesses from 4-6pm, and culminates with a fun, all-ages party at the Turner Pavilion & Park. The festival features kid, dog, and adult costume contests; arts and crafts activities; a community ofrenda; food trucks; DJ dance party; light show; wacky shacks, goober blobs, and whisker biscuits.

Schedule of Events

 

4pm-6pm Downtown Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-treating at 40+ downtown locations. Pick up a Candy Map at the Hardest Higgins House Visitor Center (212 S. Main St.) for a list of participating businesses. Look for the orange balloons outside!

**Candy will not be handed out before 4pm.

 

5pm-8pm: Party at the Pavilion

Dance party with DJ Barkley, food trucks, caramel apple bar by Heritage Bakery, arts activities with Shenandoah Valley Art Mobile, Harrisonburg Fire Department relay races, community ofrenda, slime pot & witch's brew, monster painting wall, Explore More’s spider maze, “Thriller” flash mob and more!

 

6pm Costume Contests

All costume contests start at 6pm underneath Turner Pavilion. Dogs will lead the pack, followed by children aged 0-5, elementary aged, middle/high school aged, and concluding with the adult contest.

Dog will be judged based on these categories:

  • Most Original (Best Homemade Costume)
  • Boo! Scariest!
  • Best Combo [Dog(s) and Owner(s)]
  • Best in Show

Humans will be awarded prizes in the following categories, based on creativity, originality, and humor:

  • First Place
  • Runner-Up

 **No pre-registration is required. To participate, arrive at the Pavilion no later than 6pm.
