Urgie’s Cheesesteaks brings a little piece of Philly to the Shenandoah Valley by serving up authentic cheesesteaks. The restaurant started out as a food truck run by two brothers, Steve and Tommy Urglavitch. The brothers, Philadelphia natives, saw an opportunity to introduce a long-standing Philadelphia food staple to the Valley, and they jumped at it!
Many of their ingredients are specially ordered from the places they know and love, like their Constanza rolls, which they special order all the way from New York! Their menu features customizable Angus beef cheesesteaks that can be topped “with Whiz” or “without” (that’s cheese whiz), provolone or American cheese, peppers, onions, and ….they also offer pierogis, Griffin bites, gluten-free chicken bites tossed in customers choice of their favorite sauce, fresh-made fries, and funnel cake fries. They also offer a delicious vegetarian cheesesteak, served up with everything, but the beef!
The brothers opened up a bar, creating a space to sit indoors, take in a hockey game, or just hang out. The bar offers local beers and national classics. Their draft beers are served through a unique, customized draft beer system that the two brothers built by hand! They also have a selection of cocktails, including signature martinis and sangrias.
In opening the restaurant, the brothers knew their goal was to create a friendly neighborhood joint that anyone and everyone felt comfortable stopping in to. Whether you want to sit outside on their picnic tables and enjoy the beautiful downtown scenery or head inside into the bar to catch the game on any one of their multiple TVs. The bar is located in the historic Carriage house, a building that has been in Harrisonburg since the 1850’s. The building, once used for offices, was in need of a tune-up, and that’s just what the brothers did! Seeing the beauty in both the building and its historical significance, they set out to make the most out of the carriage house, while honoring its place in Harrisonburg history.
The restaurant features a happy hour Monday – Friday from 3-6 where they offer $1 off any 8” cheesesteak, as well as $2 off the Philly special. Looking for something new to drink? Urgie’s also offers their specialty cocktails every Friday evening from 3-6, as well. They also host a veterans/first responder appreciation day every Thursday, which offers a 15% discount for all past and present service members and first responders.
