The Harrisonburg Dance Cooperative (HDC) is a collective of innovative and passionate choreographers, teachers, and dancers who believe that “Dance is for everybody and every body.” HDC meets dual needs in the local community: they provide training opportunities for local dance artists along with dance performances for community audiences. HDC began in 2014 and quickly expanded its impact by increasing class offerings and outreach for adult dancers of all levels. The Cooperative has also staged numerous public performances, including the mainstage show “Re/Turn,” in February of 2023 at Eastern Mennonite University, and several studio-hosted shows in 2023 and 2024. In 2022, HDC received a grant through the Earlynn J. Miller Endowment for the Arts Fund, granted by the Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. The grant has made it possible for HDC to open their own studio in the heart of downtown Harrisonburg, install sprung floors, and make various improvements to the space that improve the dancing experience for all who use it. The studio and performance space will be the site of this Winter Dance Performance. The venue provides an intimate space for audiences to experience firsthand the range of expression that our local choreographers and dancers create. From modern dance to ballet and much in between, audiences will share in the emotions and stories that every body can tell through dance.
