President of the North East Neighborhood Association
Karen Thomas has lived in the North East neighborhood of Harrisonburg her whole life, Ms. Thomas helped to found the North East neighborhood Association in 2006 and is the current president.
Harrisonburg can be proud of what it does when it comes together. And there are few examples in the Friendly City as noteworthy as the North East Neighborhood Association’s community effort to make their area a safer place. When a murder happened in the area, the community didn’t step down. This moved Thomas and other concerned citizens to found the North East Neighborhood Association. “I had seen so many neighborhood watch programs come and go. There’s always a big to-do about it, then, when it dies down, people go home.” The North East Neighborhood Association not only addresses crime within their community, but have worked to alleviate any and all problems the community or individuals within the area face.
The North East Neighborhood Association works in tandem with groups ranging from the Roberta Webb Daycare Center to The Rockingham Sheriff’s Office. This November, the North East Neighborhood Association and Friendly City Food Co-op will be having a bake off and a young artist competition at the Friendly City Food Co-op. In the past these have been two different events, but this year they are being combined for one great day.
